Recreation - Driving
|
|
Doune and Kilmadock are an excellent base for touring.
The following four cardinal routes offer a sample of the wider area by vehicle.

North West - Circular (Distance: 70 miles, Times: 3 hours)
Starting at Doune Information Centre drive north on A84 to Callander.
Continue on to Strathyre and through to Lochearnhead.
This is the start of the beautiful Loch Earn.
Drive along the shores of Loch Earn until it joins the A85 road to Comrie.
Comrie sits on the fault line separating the lowlands from the highlands.
Take the B827 to Braco and pause at the Roman Ardoch fort.
Follow the B8033 to Dunblane, perhaps stopping to see the Cathedral.
Lastly take the A820 to Doune.

North East - Straight (Distance: 60 miles, Times: 2 hours)
Starting at Doune Information Centre drive east towards Dunblane.
Drive through the town and turn left onto the old A9 and pass back over the new road towards Kinbuck.
The back roads of Strathallan lead to Braco.
Head North for a mile towards Crieff and then turn back East to Gleneagles.
Rejoin the A9 here until Dunning is signed.
Take the Dunning road all the way to Perth with it's gardens, the Silvery Tay, walks and sights.
Head back southwards down the A9 to return.

East - Circular (Distance: 60 miles, Times: 2 hours)
Starting at Doune Information Centre start Eastwards along the A820, but turn right onto the B824 road for Bridge of Allan (SAS Monument on Hill of Row).
Head through Bridge of Allan and turn up onto the Sheriffmuir (historic battle ground) and continue across the moors for about 10 miles.
This road will now cross the A9, exit using the B8081 for Blackford (famous for its mineral water).
Take the A823 south through the glen of Gleneagles (the town, golf course and hotel are to the north).
On the other of the pass is Glendevon, a scenic valley and popular picnic spot.
You will start to enjoy the scenic delights of Ochil hills now.
Turn right onto the A91 towards Dollar (visit Castle Campbell here).
Take the B913, then right onto the B9140, then left onto the B910 for the Kincardine Bridge.
You will pass the Dunmore Pineapple on the way to the bridge.
Turn right onto the A876 and cross the bridge.
Head back up the A805 passing through Airth to Stirling.
Take the A84 road north back to Doune.

West - Circular (Distance: 40 miles, Times: 2 hours)
Starting at Doune Information Centre start northwards towards Callander.
In Callander turn left onto A821 for Aberfoyle and the Trossachs.
You will soon be driving along the shoreline of Loch Venacher.
Drive through a small hamlet, Brig O' Turk.
You will pass the turning to Loch Katrine, Glasgow's pioneering water supply where steam cruises are available.
Head through Duke's Pass into Aberfoyle.
Turn right out of Aberfoyle onto the A81 towards Glasgow.
After a mile turn right to Gartmore (view of Ben Lomond).
At far end of village turn left towards Glasgow again and head for a mile and then turn left on the B835 to Buchlyvie (you can view Flanders Moss).
Turn left onto the A811 and three miles later you will pass through Arnprior.
Turn left onto the B8034 towards the Port of Menteith.
The road runs along the shoreline of the lake.
The lake has an island Inchmahome priory (seasonal boats to the Historic Scotland site).
Turn right onto the A873 and travel for a mile and turn left onto the A81 north.
You will pass Loch Rusky and turn right down the B8032 towards Doune.
This road will follow the beautiful river Teith all the way to the Teith Bridge at Doune.

4x4 driving is regularly arranged in Queen Elizabeth Forest park.
