Heather Jock – Dog Breeder

Wild and Woolly character, called John Ferguson, lived in the grounds of Old Newton. Infamous for his poaching, stealing, breeding of dogs and drinking. He always looked dishevelled. Later deported to Australia. East of Argaty Quarry lies a wood affectionately known as Heather Jocks wood.

Dan Kennedy – Poet, Slater

Daniel had a large red nose, a square grey beard, twinkling eyes and dressed all in black. Best remembered as a poet, he lived at Glengarry cottage, 68 main street. A Slater by trade. Doune is famous for its slaters.         

Duncan Dow – Gamekeeper

Lived in keepers Cottage at Teith Bridge and terrorised the local boys and girls. The Hill down to the Bridge is often called Dan Doos brae. Dan Kennedy mentioned Duncan Dow in one of his poems.

Dr McGill – Stage Doctor

Nicknamed Merry Andrew. Best known as a Stage Doctor who was always present at Markets and Fairs selling miraculous cures and ointments by making humorous speeches and walking high tightropes. His horse Black Bess drove his travelling cart into the river Teith one day.

Nanny Kane – Church Beadle

Nicknamed Bell Nanny because she rang the church bell the same way for all occasions.

Duke of Albany – Doune castle

Builder of Doune Castle Once Regent and Governor of Scotland . Sir Robert Stewart, Earl of Menteith, Earl of Fife, Duke of Albany is most famous for arranging the release of king James from the French.

Earls of Moray –  Lords of  Doune

The largest landowner in Kilmadock. Erected the Mercat Cross in 1611. The family has royal connections and have been very kind to the area. The Morays paid for a proper water supply from the Doune braes in 1899  and have donated land for the rural hall, the bowling green , doune ponds and the park.

Sir James Graham – Kilbryde Castle

Son of the Earl of Mentieth. Built the castle in 1460. Famous for his bravery in battle. Castle is famous for its ghost of Lady Anne Chisholm of Cromlix.

John Napier – Inventor of Logarithms

Provost of Edinburgh, Inventor of Logarithms, born in Merchiston Castle in 1550. Lord Napier, lived at Ballinton, near Coldoch. Married Elizabeth Mentieth.

Walter Comyn – Inchmahome Priory

Walter Comyn, the Earl of Menteith built Inchmahome Priory on the lake of Monteith in 12th Century.

Walter Drummond -Dean of Dunblane  

was knighted by King James the Second, and died in 1455. First Owner of land known as Deanston

Mrs Campbell – St Fillians Chapel

Wife of Sir James Thompson who was chairman of the Caledonian Railway. Mrs Campbell was instrumental in building the local Roman Catholic Chapel, St Fillians in 1875.

Lord Kames –Blairdrummond

Henry Homes of Kames (Berwickshire) was a judge, author and Member of Parliament. He became related by marriage through his grandson to the Moray family who are the largest landowners in the area.  He thought of the idea of reclaiming large tracts of  moss and turning it into arable land.

He Died in 1867.

Sir Arthur Muir –Blairdrummond

Owned the Blairdrummond estate. Famous for gifting the Muir hall and the Deanston green clock

in memory of his mother, Lady Muir.

Robin Oig – Master Drover                     

One of the five sons of “Rob Roy” Macgegor. Robin Oig Mcombich  was a highland master cattle drover. He served in the 42nd regiment  at the battle of Fontenoy, but was captured, then exchanged and later released back to Scotland . He was hanged in Edinburgh in 1754 and was buried in Balquhidder

Industrial

Main Pistolmakers                    Thomas Caddell

1646 Thomas Caddell the blacksmith came form nearby Muthill and set up a new business of Pistol making. He soon became a genius and turned out pistols unrivalled in their workmanship and accuracy. Some at that time costing a year’s wages.

Thomas & John Murdoch

Thomas was born in 1735 and made over 81 pistols. A pair of his pistols were presented to George Washington in 1779. His brother John was the last pistolmaker in Doune and moved his trade to Leith. John Campbell & sons   John became a pistolmaker in 1701 and died in 1740 leaving 3 sons. One of the sons, Alexander, produced fine decorative inlaid pistols and his son, John in turn

other local pistolmakers were : Christie, McKenzie, McNeill, Mitchie, Stewart and Sutherland.

 

Sir James Thompson – Railway

Entered the railways as a lad in 1848 and ended up being General Manager of the Caledonian Railway. The Dunblane-Doune-Callander line was opened in 1858. He lived at Inverardoch mains. Died  1906.

Robert Spittal – Royal Tailor

Tailor to Queen Margaret, wife of King James 4th. Famous for building the bridge over the river Teith after being refused crossing the river by the ferryman, as he could not pay. He also built other bridges and a hospital in Stirling. The Bridge carries a coat of arms of a Spread Eagle and a pair of scissors.

James Smith – Deanston Mill

John Buchanan bought 6 acres of land for a lint mill beside the River Teith in 1771.  Archibald Buchanan, John’s brother, became the manager and they called the mill, the Adelphi.  They were unsuccessful in making the mill profitable and later sold the mill to James Finlay and Company. When Kirkman Finlay, James’s eldest son, took over the family business he saw the potential in producing their own cotton goods to export.  The Buchanan’s bankruptcy in 1794 allowed Kirkman to buy Deanston Mill in 1806.  James Smith  was first manager of Deanston Cotton Mill, owned by James Finlay and Co. He extended and greatly improved the mill by efficiency and ingenuity. He also invented agricultural deep ploughing and had the brilliant idea of diverting water from loch Katrine for

Sir John Muir - Deanston Mill

Sir John Muir bought his way into the company who owned Deanston Cotton Mill, James Finlay and Co, and after the death of John Finlay in 1873. Muir moved into Deanston House and became actively involved in community life, becoming an Elder in the Bridge of Teith Free Kirk and donating a bowling green and reading and recreation rooms to the villagers of Deanston. In 1889 he became Lord Provost of Glasgow and was involved in organising the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888.

Sweetie SandyEdinburgh Rock

Alexander Ferguson was born and lived in Doune. His flair for cookery made him unpopular in his day.

On the back of his success of the Edinburgh Rock sweet he bought up most of the street he lived in

And stayed in Glenardoch house, now a B&B.

Mrs Henderson – Rural Hall 

Lived at Argaty House, Argaty. Known as the Grey Lady, best remembered for her energy converting parts of Argaty into beautiful gardens. She gifted the community the Doune  rural hall

Mr James Thompson – Doune Library –

Once of Doune then of USA. Gifted the local library to the community 

Professor William Smart – Maths & Astronomy

Chair of Astronomy at Glasgow University, he built it’s strong reputation in Astronomy.

Professor William Allan Neilson

3rd President of Smith College Massachusetts 1917, retired in 1939. The USA’s largest liberal arts college for women. Between the two world wars, he brought many important exiled or endangered foreign teachers, scholars, lecturers and artists to the college.

Rev J Witherspoon – President of Princeton University USA

President from 1768-1794. He was the only ordained clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence. For six years after that he was an influential member of the Continental Congress.

John Grierson – TV producer

John Grierson  from Deanston. 'invented' the documentary idea of film making

he was internationally successful especially in America

Karl Denver – Country music star, USA

His real name was Angus Murdo Mackenzie and was born in Glasgow in 1931 . He lived in Deanston from 1941 to 1943. Famous in 1960’s in USA as a country artist in a group called Trio. He had a unique western yodelling style voice.
