The villages of Doune and Deanston, together with Argaty, Buchany and Row and the outlying farms make up the district of Kilmadock. Kilmadock sits on the border between Highland and Lowland Scotland, straddling the river Teith. It is this strategic location, along with the people and natural resources of the area, that have made the region popular from Roman times to contemporary Britain (see Community pages).

As well as living and working in the area, Doune and its surroundings offer the visitor and residents places to stay, eat and drink, annual events, sports and the great outdoors. Used as a base, Doune offers quick and easy access to the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth as well as acting as the bridge between the Forth Valley, the Highlands and the new Trossachs National Park (see Visitor and Recreation pages).

Kilmadock's history provides a snapshot of Scottish development from Roman settlement, through one of the finest medieval castles in Scotland to the famous Doune Pistol manufacture. In addition to locations Doune and Deanston provided home and influence to important figures and social change in the industrial era and 20 century (see History pages).

Social development continues with the Kilmadock Development Trust co-ordinating growth and development in the area whilst providing a base and support for local initiatives. Clubs and societies from toddler to tennis are supported by the local shops and business providing the community with events and opportunities (see What's On pages).
